WHY IS PREVENTION OF TRAFFICKING IN HUMAN BEINGS IMPORTANT?

Prevention of trafficking in human beings is premised on the reasons for falling prey to a situation of trafficking. Usually, the reasons are attributed to the victims themselves – because they were naïve, because they were not informed, because they made the wrong choices. In fact, the reasons for trafficking in human beings are global. Poverty, conflicts, inequality, unemployment and discrimination are among the main factors forcing many people to seek better living conditions and work in other countries. The lack of safe and legal possibilities for migration and the general demand for cheap labour are other factors exposing large groups of people to risks of exploitation.

The best prevention of trafficking in human beings consists of improving the people’s economic well-being, reducing unemployment, creating more possibilities for fulfilment.

The prevention of trafficking in human beings is not meant to restrict people to travel and seek a better life abroad.

Everyone has the right to pursue their happiness but this should be done in an informed manner and a manner which does not put the person at risk.
